A visit to San Diego would not be complete without a visit to this popular destination. Situated in beautiful Balboa Park just 15 miles from Best Western Otay Valley, the 100-acre zoo is where you'll encounter more than 3,700 animals. These rare and endangered critters represent over 650 species. Fans of exotic plants will want to check out the expansive collection in the lush botanical garden.
Every type you can imagine, from mammals and birds to amphibians and reptiles. Even arthropods. Coming from all over the world, the San Diego Zoo residents include leopards, arctic foxes, camels, giant pandas, grizzly bears, eagles, koalas, laughing kookaburras, komodo dragons, macaws, mandrills, otters, reindeers, and Tasmanian devils.
They’re a chance to get up-close-and-personal. You can pet the woolly body of a sheep or comb the hair of a pygmy goat at the aptly named Petting Paddock. Then there’s the always popular Giraffe Feeding. For $10, you can feed these oh-so-tall creatures three yummy biscuits. Stop by the Elephant Care Center where the keepers engage in both husbandry training and basic care.
