LIVING COAST DISCOVERY CENTER

Just a short drive from Best Western Otay Valley, the Living Coast Discovery Center rests on the 316-acre Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. Far from a museum, this unique and gentle place is where a myriad of animals can be appreciated in their natural habitats. The main focus of the Center is to educate visitors on the environment and to create a deep sense of respect for nature.

WHAT EXHIBITS WILL I FIND AT THE DISCOVERY CENTER?

Everything from seahorses, eels, and sharks to lobsters, abalone, and sea stars can be observed at the Discovery Center Gallery. Stop by Turtle Lagoon to catch a glimpse of sea turtles galore. The Shark & Ray Experience features rays you can touch and sharks you can view in a 21,000-gallon tank. Hawks, osprey, and owls are some of the birds of prey that haunt Raptor Row.

WHAT CAN I SEE ALONG THE WALKING TRAILS?

There are 1.5 miles of trails that begin at the Discovery Center and end up at San Diego Bay. As you make your way, you’ll see the remains of a gun powder factory foundation. There are also railroad tracks that were once used by trains to transport kelp from the bay to the factory. You'll also want to keep an eye out for wildlife, such as shorebirds and rabbits.
